How to Jailbreak Kindle (2017 Method)

Update on Jul. 8, 2016

This post was originally about jailbreaking Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Voyage which exactly has the firmware version 5.6.5.

Now you needn’t stick to 5.6.5 anymore. With the new downgrade firmware method, we have new solution for jailbreaking a Kindle. So I edited this post.  Now it’s the latest working method.

Must Read: This jailbreak method is provided by MobileRead Forum,  you should know and take responsibility for all the risks about jailbreaking a Kindle.

You can jailbreak these Kindle models with this guide

  • Kindle Oasis
  • Kindle Voyage
  • Kindle Paperwhite 3
  • Kindle Touch 2/3

Kindle Touch, Kindle Paperwhite 1/2 users please read this article.

The files you will need

mediafire download guide

The step-by-step guide

  1. Turn on Kindle’s airplane mode.
  2. Connect Kindle to computer, until you can see the Kindle’s storage on computer.
  3. Download the “main-htmlviewer.tar.gz” file, copy it to the root path (not the documents folder) of Kindle.
  4. Safely eject Kindle from computer.
  5. At Kindle’s home screen, click the “search” icon, input “;installHtml” (not including the quote marks) and enter to confirm.
  6. If the Kindle screen flashes, you can go on to the following steps.
  7. Connect Kindle to computer again.
  8. Download the JailBreak-1.14.N-FW-5.x-hotfix.zip and unzip it, copy the “Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14.N_install.bin” file to the root path of Kindle.
  9. Safely eject Kindle from computer
  10. At Kindle’s home screen, click “Menu” icon and choose “Settings” –> “Menu” icon again –> “Update your Kindle
  11. Wait the Kindle restarts and all the jobs are finished now
  12. Kindle Oasis and Kindle Touch 3 users please install two extensions: KUAL and MRPI, they are required for all your following experience after jailbreaking. And please update to new firmware before installing these two extensions, as all hack plugins and extensions need to install again after firmware updating.

jailbreak kindle 5.6.5

Update to latest firmware after jailbreak

After jailbreaking your Kindle, you can update to the latest firmware version (at this moment it’s 5.8.1) and keep Kindle jailbreaked.

And please notice, if you want to install some hacking plugins like screensaver hack, font hack, please update firmware at first. Because all the plugins will be gone after firmware updating.

Amazon just released firmware 5.8.2, it is proved that Kindle keeps jailbreak after updating to 5.8.2.

However, you will need to re-install all the hack plugins and extensions.

Prevent Kindle firmware auto update (if you want)

By default, Amazon would push the new firmware update to Kindle automatically. And the new firmware (later than 5.8.1) may make your Kindle back to unjailbreak.

That’s why some people don’t want to Kindle to push new firmware update, but we can’t find a control in Kindle to close it.

However, we have a trick to help you prevent Kindle from auto updating.

  1. Connect Kindle to computer with USB
  2. Create a new emply folder in Kindle’s root path
  3. Rename the newly created folder to “update.bin.tmp.partial” (without the quote marks)

Things to do after jailbreaking

After jailbreaking your Kindle, you can install some hack plugins you help you make the most of Kindle. Like read EPUB on Kindle, change the screensaver, etc..

FAQ

Should I turn on Airplane Mode when jailbreak the Kindle?

When I jailbreak my Kindle with this method, I connect to WiFi all the time, so it is not necessary to turn on the airplane mode.

After the Kindle restart, it shows Firmware Update Error

After copy the Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin into Kindle, please choose “Update your Kindle”, don’t choose restart Kindle.

The latest firmware version doesn't push to my Kindle after jailbreaking?

You can manually update the firmware. Just download the latest firmware file from this Amazon page. Copy the firmware file to the root path of Kindle’s storage and update your Kindle.

hey, thanks a lot. Please update the hotfix pakage link. I had to get it from some other place.

    • Admin

Thanks for the feedback, the link has been updated.

      • vin

My kindle got updated to latest firmware without any warning. Is there any way to go back to 5.6.5?

        • Admin

You have to jailbreak at first then you can downgrade the firmware version, so for your situation, the answer is negative.

          • vin

I guess i have to wait till the jailbreak of this firmware to release, then jailbreak it and keep it on flight mode. Is there any app that blocks the update server?

          • Admin

Once it’s jailbreaked, you can install some scripts to block the auto update.

          • vin

Alright. I’ll keep that in my mind. And I’d really appreciate it if you could let me know when the jailbreak for 5.7.2.1

          • Admin

I will update this post or write a new post once there is breakthrough on this issue.

          • Admin

Now you can downgrade your Kindle’s firmware version easily, read the downgrade guide here: https://www.ereader-palace.com/downgrade-kindles-firmware-version-2016-method/. And I’ve also edited this post, it’s the latest working solution after you downgrade your Kindle.

          • vin

Hey, my kindle was downgraded properly, then I followed the jailbreak steps which didn’t show any error. I suppose my kindle is jailbroken now, where should I go next? Are there any tweaks or software that I can install now?

            Hi,
I’m on a PW3 on 7.4.1, when I copy the first file and search for “;installHtml” nothing seems to happen. When I try to update with the second file (bin one), it starts updating, then says it’s not a valid update file and reboots. I’m on a french PW, is that the problem ? I’ve also tried downgrading to 5.6.5 but when I copy the file, it says I have an invalid update file and deletes it.

          • Admin

The latest Kindle firmware version is 5.8.1, so I am a bit confused about “PW3 on 7.4.1”.

For KPW3, please downgrade the firmware to 5.7.4(https://www.ereader-palace.com/downgrade-kindles-firmware-version-2016-method/ ) at first, then jailbreak it with this guide.

          • And

            Sorry, i’m on FW 5.7.4.1
I tried downgrading, but it says the firmware is not valid file, and deletes it from the kindle.

          • Admin

Can you provide the first 6 digits of your Kindle’s serial number?

          • And

            It’s G090G1

          • Admin

It’s the white KPW3, and it should be eligible for downgrading and jailbreaking. Please try to download the 5.7.4 bin file again, or directly go to the jailbreak guide.

          • And

I had to reset the kindle to be able to downgrade and then jailbreak. Thanks for your help !

  • Hi! thanks for the how to, but my kindle doesn’t work. first time the JB is ok, than i’ve reset kindle and now always says “jailbreak failed”, after stage 2 and search ;fc-cache…

    any solution?

    • Admin

So you’ve already figured it out?

      • yes! the problem was only there! thanks 🙂

      • Aman

I have same problem, I reset my device and now it is saying “jailbreak failed.” Please, tell me what should I do?

yes, a flash and then go blank, after I connect to the PC and load a bar with FW 5.5.0 and kindle saying “you are jailbroken” appears after installing the Html document

        • Admin

You mean after jailbreaking to Kindle, you want to install the 5.5.0 firmware on your Kindle?

          • ETC

Yes, I followed (the 2016 method) July 8, 2016 to make the first downgrade jailbreak and install it

          • Admin

I need the first 6 digits of your Kindle, and current firmware version,

          • Admin

I’ve updated the hotfix bin file, please download it again then try to continue the jailbreak job. If still stuck by step 5, you can reset your Kindle and try again, don’t forget to back up your Kindle books at first.

looks like it’s working I could complete all the steps to the end.
So now as I can prove it really works by installing a personal wallpaper?

    Hi,
I rolled back to 5.6.0, then searched & succesfully implemented the “;installHtml” – well, it looked liked it loaded up a new screen.
I then attempted to install the “Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin” file, but i received an Error code.
My serial number is: 90DD, which is a Kindle Basic (apparently), does this Jailbreak version still work?
    Many thanks

    • Admin

What error code did you get? Can you tap the “Update Your Kindle”

      • Angus

        Hi,
After trying to repeat the above process, i get an error code 007.
Then the Kindle restarts itself, deletes the above .bin, and the “update your Kindle” has disappeared.
        Cheers

        • Admin

In step 2, please put the downloaded file “main-htmlviewer.tar.gz” into Kindle’s root path, don’t unzip it.

          • Angus

            Hi,
Yeap, I don’t unzip the .gz file. Though, it does come across as a .tar, not a .tar.gz
            Tried again, same error

          • Admin

I guess this might cause the problem, you need make sure it’s a .tar.gz file. Did you use some downloader tool which changes its extension name?

          • Angus

Nope, just Windows 10 – Google Chrome.
There are some issues with using ‘MediaFire’ where it’ll pop-up with Adds, but that’s manageable.
            I’ll try again

          • Angus

            ah HA! Success!
Apparently, i just had to try again and again and again. I didn’t do anything different, but it’s seemed to have worked.
A message appears at the top after the ‘;installHtml’ saying ‘You are Jailbroken’, and then I successfully installed the hot-fix on this page.
Now, to hope that i can get my Calibre & collections to work properly.
Thanks a bundle, i truly appreciate it – i despise not able to organise my Collections from Calibre

          • Admin

Glad you made it. However, I will update this post, to help readers download files from MediaFire. Some people new to MediaFire may click on the ad button instead of real download button.

  • Pjootr

    Hi,
    thanks for the article!
However after doing step 7 on my PW2 (9017 2201), the “update your kindle” option is blank. No wonder: when I reconnect the kindle to the PC, I can see that the .bin file had disappeared. I repeated this many times, but the .bin files always seem to disappear from the kindle root folder.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that I can only get back the home screen by disconnecting the cable (not by simply safely ejecting the PW2).
    Maybe you’ve seen similar?

    Thank you
    Br
    Peter

    • Admin

Did you roll back the firmware version to 5.4.3.2 at first?

      • Pjootr

Sure, it’s on 5.4.3.2. Also steps 1-8 were performed.
(On my laptop I can eject it safely (can get back to home screen without disconnecting the cable), but the .bin file disappears just the same. – seems it was a naive idea 🙂 )

        • Admin

I get it, I will post another post specially for jailbreaking Kindle Paperwhite 2, once it’s published will inform you by reply.

          • Pjootr

thanks, so the disappearing .bin file is not an unknown anomaly 🙂
thanks in advance for the post!

          • Pjootr

            very cool, thanks!
actually, I’ve already did it with a method that uses FW 5.6.5. But since one of the apps I want to use (collections manager) isn’t working perfectly on 5.6.5, I might try your method on FW 5.4.0.
            thanks again

Add a section here on that requirement, it is needed by your readers who post “the UYK doesn’t work and the file disappears”.

Also, step #7 (same link as above) has been re-written to avoid the problems people where having doing the upgrade to newer firmware.

Worked like a charm on my Kindle Paperwhite.

Got epub reading with KOreader. Once I synced with Amazon though, it got rid of the launcher. Any advice?

    • Admin

“I synced with Amazon though”, you mean sync with your Amazon’s library, or sync to the latest firmware?

      • Qasim57

        Synced with my Amazon library

        • Admin

When “it got rid of the launcher”, can you launch KOreader again?

          • Qasim57

Nope, I can’t anymore. I used to do that with the launcher. It also got rid of the screen saver hack (I get amazon ads rather than the images I was getting before).

          • Admin

            Can you launch KUAL?

          • Qasim57

Nope, I don’t see it in my Library anymore… I’m not sure if I need to re-jailbreak or not

          • Admin

Looks like your Kindle updated to new firmware, so your installed plugins are gone. You can try to install those hack plugins again. (In theory your Kindle keeps jailbroken when updates to new firmware.)

          • Qasim57

            I will try that, thank-you! 🙂

          • Admin

Amazon rolled out the firmware 5.8.2.1 yesterday, I guess your Kindle automatically update the firmware. This will surely make KUAL and KOreader disappeared.

          • Qasim57

Aha, I see! Any steps you’d recommend to get KOreader and KOAL back?

I tried following your guide (without re-jailbreaking) and copied in the htmlviewer tar file, did a search for the “;htmlViewer and got the file in my library that says the kindle has been jailbroken.

I don’t see the KUAL launcher in my library though, I’ll try and re-install it again or something.

Are these the right things to do to get KOAL and KOreader back?

          • Admin

You are running the jailbreak process, if you need to install KUAL and KOreader again, please check this post: https://www.ereader-palace.com/4-must-have-plugins-to-install-after-jailbreaking-kindle/

  • Nollers

Thank You. The link in the FAQ for MANUAL FIRMWARE UPDATE is wrong, you are pointing us to the source files and we need binary. So you can google that but for example here is the correct link to get the .bin for the Kindle PW3 firmware 5.8.5.0.1 (last version as of nov 2016) => https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201756220

  • Nollers

Do not update after 5.8.2.1. I updated to 5.8.5.0.1 and it fucked things up. After installing KUAL, when I tried to open it to see if it was working, I got a popup message “This item is not signed by an authorized developer”. Now, I am f*cked and trying to downgrade again but I read that it is impossible if the Kindle has updated after a certain version. Looks like Amazon is defending against this…

  • Nollers

Also, what are we supposed to do with the firmware SOURCE code? They aren’t binaries (.bin). When I put the 5.8.2.1 source archive on my kindle root’s folder, I can’t update (update is greyed out). So I’m stucked with the last version 5.8.5.0.1 ?? Meaning that I just made my Kindle unjailbreakable and lost 3 hours of my life, right?

I’ll never get those cool screensavers showing covers of books – that was the ONLY thing I cared about.

  • turb0k1d

my PW3 has the option “update your kindle” greyed out. I’ve successfully completed all of the steps above. I’m on 5.7.4. Anything i’m forgetting?

    • Admin

Did you put the file “Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14.N_install.bin” in Kindle’s root path?

      • turb0k1d

Yep, and then went to menu and clicked “update your kindle”. I’m now trying to upgrade the firmware to the latest version

        • turb0k1d

To clarify, after installing the jailbreak update, the “update your kindle” option is greyed out. I’ve tried copying the file over again, but can’t apply the update.

Hello, I have a PW3, I did the downgrade 5.7.4 and I did the htmlviewer procedure witch seemed to work sucessfully. Then, when i try to update with the Update_jailbreak_bridge_1.14.N_install.bin, i have the 007 error. Do you have any Idea of what i can do?
    Thank You

    Cedric

      1. At step 3, make sure you are NOT unpack the .tar.gz file.
      2. At step 8, make sure the file is copied to the root path of Kindle.
      3. Redownload the JailBreak-1.14.N-FW-5.x-hotfix file and run the process again. Sometime you can solve the problem by repeating the process even you didn’t change anything.

Every time I try and update my kindle paperwhite 3, after having copied “Update_jailbreak_hotfix_1.14.N_install.bin” file to the kindle folder, it gives me a ‘update error: 007’.

Great!! I performed just step by step this guide and my PW3 works as it should. For info – i updated FW to 5.8.9 after jailbreak.
Note: after jailbreak I deregistered my kindle and when tried to open Kindle launcher it throws an error, so I registered it again and rebooted and Launcher works!
